Can I get an Oy Vey?

Oy vey is mirAs reported by NBC News and the Miami Herald, six gay couples are suing the State of Florida to overturn the state’s gay marriage ban.  Whatever the outcome, this case will be closely watched by both advocates and opponents of same sex marriage, as well as members of civil rights groups, Supreme Court watchers, Constitution supporters, history buffs, legal beagles, bible thumpers, atheists, doctors, lawyers, Indian chiefs, and anyone else who isn’t obsessing over American Idol.

As NBC News reported, the six couples in the Florida case are “joining dozens of other court cases across the country filed since an historic Supreme Court decision last year in favor of LGBT rights.”

The Herald reported, “Because they cannot marry, gay couples in Florida do not share many rights and responsibilities with opposite-sex couples. For example, gays often cannot make health care decisions for an incapacitated partner. They cannot receive worker’s compensation for a partner who dies on the job. They cannot get spousal insurance coverage and benefits. The list goes on.”

Need I say this case is HUGE?  The Court’s decision will affect millions of people around the country.

Now that we’ve established how monumental this particular lawsuit is, here’s the scariest thing of all:

This historic case was assigned to none other than EX-mayor/current felony defendant Myron Rosner‘s wife, CIRCUIT COURT JUDGE SARAH ZABEL.

OH. MY. GOD.

The common theme among several attorneys I spoke with, who have tried cases before Judge Zabel, was that she’s a nice person but not exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer.  That’s hardly surprising since she chose to stand by her man throughout all his legal, ethical and personality disorders, despite the fact that he is THE most hated man in North Miami Beach and beyond.

Note to Sarah:

Sorry, Sweetie.  Juries may be limited to deliberate only on the facts presented in the courtroom.  But here in the Court of Public Opinion, you are judged by the company you keep.

And, in your case, by the man you sleep next to.

As disturbing as that thought alone might be, the fact that you kept absolutely mum while your husband bullied city employees, vendors and residents for all those years speaks volumes.  You remained silent while he overbuilt your property to the lot lines with concrete, ignoring easements and City Code, tore up your driveway to install an illegal septic tank, made a complete jerk of himself at Code Board hearings and Council meetings, sought revenge against his political enemies, started a creepy-ass website to go after “Code violators,” and spent all your hard earned money on lawyers to defend his crooked ass, only proves that you don’t have a lick of sense in your head.  So, yeah, I had no reason to doubt those lawyers when they told me that you’re not too bright.

I’m only wondering if Steve Rothaus, who writes the Miami Herald’s Gay South Florida column (and who mentioned that this case was assigned to CIRCUIT COURT JUDGE SARAH ZABEL), realizes that the gay community’s future is in the hands of a raging ditz.  If he didn’t, he does now.

Can I get an Oy vey?
