While you were sleeping… (Updated)

NBC Miami posted the story at 1:09 AM, Teen Faces Charges in 2 Recent Armed Kidnappings.

NBC Miami Headline

It seems that this teen, who will be tried as an adult, was also involved in another crime in the area.

According to the NBC Miami article, “Miami-Dade Police say Petit-Frere wasn’t good at obeying rules in their jurisdiction. They have charged him with armed robbery, armed kidnapping and false imprisonment over a separate November incident that happened at the Oak Grove apartment complex at 15455 Northeast 6th Ave. in Miami-Dade.  According to the arrest affidavit, Petit-Frere and an accomplice confronted a woman as she walked to her apartment. The 17-year-old allegedly pointed a firearm at the victim, demanding property and her keys, and later forced her into the trunk of her own vehicle.”

WAIT … WHAT?

That sounds so freaking familiar, doesn’t it?

Oh, yeah!  That’s sounds eerily like the very same crime that North Miami Beach Police Department denied was even remotely related to its city’s rape case from January 16, 2014.

You know, the one that Channel 7’s Rosh Lowe broke on January 21, 2014 and got a verbal spanking for doing so (and I got tsk-tsked for blogging).

The same one, in fact, that North Miami Police Department’s Major Neal Cuevas told Rosh Lowe, “On the surface of it, there is enough about these two crimes to have the investigators initiate contact with each other to determine if they are related.  The fact that it was a woman getting to or into her car, the fact that she was approached by individuals armed, the fact that they [the victims] were placed back in the car, or in our particular case, in the trunk of the car, and they were driven around.”

But, hey.  Maybe Major Cuevas got it all wrong.  Maybe it’s just a coincidence.

(UPDATE:  Major Cuevas just advised me that the Miami-Dade case is not the same one that took place in North Miami on January 11, 2014, but that the North Miami Police Department has not yet ruled that theirs is unrelated to the two crimes with which Terry Petit-Frere is charged.)

At press time, NBC Miami reported, “The teen will be tried as an adult for both crimes.  It wasn’t known if he has an attorney.”

I’m thinking he’s gonna need a good one.  Ben, you interested?

  1. Are you serious? You accuse the NMBPD of incompetence in the handling of a rape case because they didn’t bobble their heads and agree there are similarities in two rape cases. There might be 20 cases where this dude’s DNA will show up. It takes time. Police work should be resolute and exacting. A responsible cop is not going to throw around theories until they have something solid. Just because a policeman from another jurisdiction tells you he might approach it another way, doesn’t make what the North Miami Beach police are doing the wrong approach. They are all professionals and need to be trusted to do their difficult job without the constant insults. To quote you: “Are you freakin’ kidding me?”

    1. I’m not sure what you mean by “a policeman from another jurisdiction,” but I can assure you that I’ve done my research. In addition to sitting in on meetings and conferences about media procedures with many PIOs in several jurisdictions, including North Miami Beach, I am also in constant contact with local reporters and other bloggers. Since I mainly cover North Miami and North Miami Beach, most of my contacts are naturally in these two cities. I have also had meetings with current and past Police Chiefs of BOTH cities to discuss their media procedures. Just today, in fact, I had the opportunity to attend the January meeting of the South Florida Media Coalition, which gave me a first hand look at how the media and various police departments interact with each other. I also met with our city’s Police Chief and PIO (Major Katerman) today to discuss their method of disseminating information, especially with respect to our recent high profile cases. What I have learned from meeting with all of these professionals has been invaluable in helping me to gain a deeper understanding of the issues.

I have never professed to be an expert at everything (like some people I know), but when I am interested in an issue, I make it my business to learn everything I can from as many people as possible in the hopes that it will enable me to grow, not only as a blogger, but as a person, a concerned citizen and an activist.

As a blogger, I also believe I have a responsibility to educate myself about everything concerning the media. Our cities’ public information offices are also part of the media as a whole, so I took it upon myself to increase my knowledge in this area.

If you think I haven’t done my research, then you obviously don’t know anything about me. If you did know me, you’d also know I wasn’t freakin’ kidding you or anyone else.

      Thank you for sharing.
