Thin blue lineLast month, the FBI released the 2013 Statistics on Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted in the United States. Of the 76 officers killed in the line of duty, 27 of them were “as a result of felonious acts.”  26 of those were by gunfire.

According to the FBI’s website, “Of the 27 officers feloniously killed, six were killed in arrest situations, five were investigating suspicious persons or circumstances, five were ambushed, four were involved in tactical situations, four were answering disturbance calls, and two were conducting traffic pursuits/stops. One was conducting an investigative activity, such as surveillance, a search, or an interview.”

An astounding 49,851 were “victims of line-of-duty assaults.”

A website entitled “Officers Down Memorial Page” lists 105 line-of-duty deaths for 2013 nationwide, stating, “Since 1791, there have been 21,960 known line of duty deaths in America. ODMP Research Volunteers constantly discover forgotten line of duty deaths throughout the country. Because of our efforts, this number includes 1,320 previously forgotten heroes, now honored on the ODMP and other local, state and national memorials.”

ODMP asserts that all line-of-duty deaths are up by 15% for 2014 so far, with gunfire deaths up by 65%.

In the last decade alone, 1,690 law enforcement officers have been killed in the line of duty nationwide, 101 of them in Florida.  38 of those were by gunfire, the most recent one occurring on November 22, 2014 in Leon County, Florida.

  1. May the Lord continue to watch over those who are brave enough to run towards the danger, while the rest run towards safety.

    1. Thank you. I am disgusted by all the cop bashing in the media and by the usual suspects. Nothing gets my goat more than race baiting, but especially at the expense of the men and women who risk their lives to protect us, including the assholes who revile them.

Okay, I’m shutting up now before I get myself in trouble.
