  1. What happened to the $2 billion in foreign aid that poured into the country after the 2010 earthquake? Looking at the video of the devestation there after Matthew hit, there sure doesn’t appear to be any evidence it was spent on new housing after the quake. This is another case where politicians will use this disaster as a way to line their pockets with more aid money and the people will get little or nothing.

  2. Unfortunately, the problem with Haiti is they have nothing that can build up the wealth of the country, so there is no income for the nation. Tourism is not going to happen until there is a reason to visit there. With little to no hotels to stay in, and attractions to draw interest, the only thing I see is the beaches. There was even a news story showing all the destruction of forests near the Dominican Republic just so people can try to rebuild.

Maybe it’s time for relief efforts like Habitat for Humanity to go in and build the homes without actually giving money to the government directly. The homes should be built in the poorer areas away from Port-au-Prince where the corruption seems the most high. These homes don’t have to be big, maybe a one/two bedroom cottage with a small kitchenette and a full bathroom.

Yes, I understand there is no infrastructure to connect to, but the saying goes, if you build it they will come.

Nonetheless, the people of Haiti are humans and deserve a chance to live a humane life, so let’s try to get them some help as quickly as possible. Sending people who are already here and contributing to society is in my opinion inhumane.

    1. Agreed. I wouldn’t give a dime to the governemnt of Haiti or to the Clinton Foundation. Either organization would squander the money and the people would get nothing. Birth copntrol could also help stabilize the country so that the cycle of poverty doesn’t keep happening decade after decade after decade.
