Slow News Friday

slow news dayHere it is Friday afternoon and I just finished all the work at my real job for the week.  Before I hit the road for the weekend, I decided to troll the pages of the Miami Herald online for some inspiration for a column.  All I got was depressed.

I tried to get interested in the Arrested Mayors story, but it only served to reinforce my belief in three things:

1.  Power corrupts.

2.  I will never run for office.

3.  Andre Pierre was one lucky SOB.

I decided to bypass some of the gruesome stories in the news and head over to the sports section.  Since the Dolphins are playing tonight in Jacksonville in their second exhibition, er, I mean, pre-season, game, I wanted to read what some of my favorite columnists have to say.  Greg Cote’s Random Evidence blog usually lightens my mood.  But not today.  His headline right out of the box, Dolphins fantasy rankings offer glum outlook, reminded me why the last Miami jersey I bought had Ricky Williams’ #34 on the back.  Back then I still had Super Bowl (or at least playoff) hopes.  Now, not so much.

Meanwhile, in college football, I was looking for updates on the Florida Gators’ upcoming season opening on Saturday, August 31st, only to read that their starting quarterback Jeff Driskel just had an emergency appendectomy on Tuesday.  He may or may not play the first game.

Oh, this football season is so not getting off to a great start.

In North Miami news, neither councilman Scott Galvin nor councilwoman Carol Keys have received responses from Madam Attorney re their questions and correspondences about the Burns v. Tondreau, et al, lawsuit fiasco.  Is anyone shocked?  I didn’t think so.

On an upbeat note, I had the opportunity to meet with North Miami Beach’s new City Manager Ana Garcia yesterday, who is totally awesome.  In my humble opinion, of course.  I fully intend to write an entire column about Ms. Garcia as soon as I can.  Stay tuned.

With nothing more exciting to report, unless something breaks between now and Monday, I’ll probably give it a rest.  Have a totally awesome weekend.

Stay dry and GO DOLPHINS!
