Yesterday, we announced that beginning this afternoon the Mayor and two Commissioners of North Miami Beach will hold their live Zoom interviews of the finalists for the City Manager position.

Candidate Arthur “Duke” Sorey, who is currently the North Miami Deputy City Manager, is scheduled to be interviewed today at 4:30 PM by Mayor Anthony DeFillipo, and at 6:30 PM by Commissioner Barbara Kramer.  Commissioner Fortuna Smukler is scheduled to interview Duke 12:00 Noon on Saturday.

At 2:39 PM on April 14, 2021 Francisco Rios, the Director of Human Resources and Risk Management, emailed Duke advising him of scheduled interviews.

Four hours later at 4:27 PM, while he was presumably on duty in the City of North Miami, Duke responded in an email that he “respectfully” declines to be interviewed in a public forum.

Imagine the chutzpah of telling your future employer that you “respectfully decline” to be interviewed in the manner that was already prearranged!

Obviously, Duke feels empowered to refuse sitting for interviews with Tony, Barbara, and Fortuna since he already knows he has the four needed votes of Team Apocalypse, i.e., Michael Joseph, McKenzie Fleurimond, Paule Villard, and Daniela Jean.

The real joke here is that Duke Sorey actually thinks he’s “been slandered” by anyone “in the public forum.”

According to FreeDictionary.com, the definition of slander is:

Unfortunately for Duke, the truth is neither false nor malicious.

And we’ve got the public records to prove it!

The truth is that Duke Sorey’s incompetent managerial record at the City of North Miami speaks for itself, including and especially, his two greatest hits:

  • North Miami’s $14.6 million deficit at the end of Fiscal Year 2019.
  • The unbudgeted expense of $1,223,582 so Duke Sorey could host a Super Bowl party in 2020.

Both of which have been indisputably documented.

You gotta wonder why Duke Sorey is so afraid to be interviewed publicly.

Is it because his incompetence would be on full display?

Or, does he have something else to hide?

North Miami Beach residents deserve the truth!

  1. Should be an automatic disqualification. Cannot let the Tail Wag the Dog! That should be the first sign he should be a no go.

  2. Hey Steph, great content on Duke and NMB. I would have written you directly but I’d rather see if others also agree with the following comment: Where’s the coverage of North Miami Elections?
For the past few elections, I’ve noticed you always cover the elections…the candidates…and have always helped me be more informed when I vote. If it hadn’t been for your coverage I’d just probably vote Bien-Amie or Keys or Smith for Mayor…I wouldn’t care for the Duke, budget, Bond measures etc etc etc. I have been looking all over for local coverage but nada.

    Just my 2 cents. 🙂

    1. I know and I’m really sorry that I’ve ignored North Miami elections. It’s been a nightmare dealing with NMB and all the crap that’s been going on. I keep meaning to write about NoMi, but I keep getting distracted. I will definitely get to it as soon as possible.

In the meantime, VotersOpinion endorses the following candidates:

      Michael Etienne for Mayor
      Kevin Burns for District 2
      Laura Hill for District 3

      1. Thanks Stephanie! I just found the Biscayne Times wrote an article about the elections…not much to supplement our decisions…would greatly appreciate your input!

And please please please – a quick reason for your endorsements would be appreciated! And I completely understand being swamped…thanks again!!

BTW – this will be my last year in North Miami and last year as a voter here! Baaaaaaai NOMI!

      2. Yes, especially why the City Clerk’s Office ( Vanessa Joseph) hasn’t posted any of candidate Jean Marcellous monthly reports. Has he even submitted them? How could he qualify even though he has never filed a report or a waiver of report.

  3. Can citizens of North Miami Beach take legal action like a lawsuit to force the commissioners to follow sunshine laws? As stated before by Janet, Duke has something to hide, and should be forced to interview in public or be disqualified. The problem is the citizens of NMB failed themselves by not voting last November. It allowed a minority to be a majority and place unqualified people onto the Commission. Our next election is not until November 2022, so unless there is a grassroots effort to recall these commissioners, we are stuck. Also, Barbara Kramer is termed out, so unless we get a more active turn out, we will see even more change as those up for reelection are Paule Villard and Fortuna Smukler with Barbara’s seat as open.

    1. Community engagement starts with the residents. If they don’t get involved in their local government, they get stuck with corrupt and unethical elected officials. I do my best to endorse qualified candidates, but since I’m no longer an NMB resident, I can’t vote for them. It really is up to the citizenry. Organize yourselves and do whatever it takes to replace the bad ones with good people.

Michael Joseph is ripe for a recall. But if no one steps up and starts the process, you all are stuck with him for another 3 1/2 years. Imagine how much damage he can do!

  4. If he’s going to be hired and paid by the residents of NMB, he needs to be interviewed in plain sight by the residents of NMB. If not, you’re not eligible for the job.

    1. I was just advised by the Mayor and Commissioner Smukler that Mr. Sorey has reconsidered, and will now attend the Zoom interviews as scheduled. If anyone attends any of the meetings, PLEASE DO NOT INTERRUPT! I know this goes without saying, but I just wanted to reiterate for those (present company included) who can’t resist pushing that “unmute” button. 🙂

Also, as soon as I receive updated Zoom information, I will update this blog.

      Steph

  5. It be too bad all the interviewin will be just a waste of time. Commissioner Pillsbury Doughboy sez it from da beginning when he sez he did not want to waste our money by paying a professional firm to do a manager search. He sez they dont need it cause they were hylee capable of hiring a manager (like I’m Sorry) on der own. Vegas Odds-makers are giving I’m Sorry da job hands down and it be such a sure thing they are not even taking any bets on anyone else gitten the job. The fix is in. Where I come from everyone just sez Ya Mon its fixed. Sorry for my english spelling.

  6. Hell yeah the fix is in. The only reason the four commissioners who want to interview the manager in private is so they can practice getting their hand signals down pat when they are on the dais.

A pull on their right earlobe tells the manager/fellow commissioner I’m voting for this.
A pull on their left earlobe tells the manager/fellow commissioner you are not voting for this.
A scratch on their nose means to get mo-money out of developer who is seeking an approval.
A hand rub on the chin means to cut the microphone off on someone criticizing them
A pat on the right forearm with the left hand means state you don’t recall.
A pat on the left forearm with the right hand means exaggerate your answer.
A tap on your wrist watch means I need a new gold one.
A crossing of the arms tells the manager to publically thank his commissioner profusely

  7. I’m glad to hear he changed his mind. The City Manager position is extremely important. Essentially the City Manager is the CEO of the city. He/she is the one who makes very important decisions on a day to day basis that affect each and every one of us. As a City Manager you need to know exactly what you are doing, be able to anticipate problems, be capable of managing a huge budget and keep the city running with a professional and capable staff. This position is not a joke. I hope the Apocalypse seriously think this through. If there’s incompetency at the top, mistakes will be costly. When you have a staff who is forced to cover for the incompetency, chaos ensues. NMB needs someone who can lead the city into the future, not someone who might send it back to the stone age.

  8. It’s been confirmed Duke will be getting the job. What was the purpose of this dog and pony show?! These commissioners are not leaders. They couldn’t even lead their own shadows. Once this goes into effect the State of Florida defiantly needs to look into Duke and Commissioner McKenzie aka Commissioner Doughboy and his cousin Luke who does his bidding. This is the same cousin that was in trouble for tax fraud.

    1. I’m sorry I didn’t see this in time. It’s over. It wouldn’t have mattered what you spoke about. The four corruptocrats were going to hire the Thug of North Miami regardless of anything you might have said.
